Postcards to I Never Knew:

Investigating the intersection of chance-based correspondence and sonic response.

This year I will be travelling around the UK posting hand illustrated postcards to random houses. The illustrations are visual responses to improvised piano pieces I have recorded. These recordings are done using a voice note app on a phone, recorded in low quality, they are full of mistakes and are simple snapshots in time. I am writing to the recipients encouraging them to respond in whatever way they would like, it could be written, illustrated or anything else. They can also simply throw the pieces away. The rejection is as important as the validation.

In a world increasingly defined by the shiny, hyper-curated perfection of the digital-realm, I wanted to experience an offline adventure – disconnect to reconnect – picking random towns and cities, riding around and depositing the creative snapshots, determined by instinct and nothing else.

All works will be documented in a digital archive, which will ultimately be exhibited alongside the physical pieces that survive and return with a response.

A digital archive will be created to accompany the surviving pieces that are returned

Below are some examples of the early works in this project along with their corresponding recordings:
