Postcards to I Never Knew:
Investigating the intersection of chance-based correspondence and sonic response.
This year I will be travelling around the UK posting hand illustrated postcards to random houses. The illustrations are visual responses to improvised piano pieces I have recorded. These recordings are done using a voice note app on a phone, recorded in low quality, they are full of mistakes and are simply snapshots in time. I am writing to the recipients encouraging them to respond in whatever way they would like, it could be written, illustrated or anything. They can also simply throw the pieces away. The rejection is as important as the validation.
In a world increasingly defined by the shiny, hyper-curated perfection of the digital-realm, I wanted to experience an offline adventure – disconnect to reconnect – picking random towns and cities, riding around and depositing the creative snapshots, determined by my instinct and nothing else.
I will create a digital archive of all the works and then exhibit the pieces that survive and come back with a response from the recipients.
